Took a while to get thinking

Let me start by saying I went to your get together down in DeSoto and had a lot of fun, my train of thoughts came from then so it shows how long it took to surface.

There are two things that I really like about Hacktastic d/20 over AD&D 3.0-4.0 and such. One is that it is simpler to learn and get a feel for the game. The second thing kind of spawned from a phase you all have always said. You always have a chance in Hacktastic… it may have been closer to "in one of our games" but I took it for meaning in Hacktastic. What I am getting at is something that is old as D&D from long ago, the fact that if you do not have the right equipment you can not hurt certain creatures. You need a magic weapon of so much plus in the old days, or in new terms you need to have a weapon made of the right substance or it can shut down low damage types that hit a lot of multiple times. I may be wrong because of oldageitis, but it I remember right the swarm can only be killed by certain types of damage…. if memory serves right you can disperse it with other weapons. What this got me thinking is that under certain situation you could be caught in a spot that you have no chance…. however unlikely it may be.

I want to be the first to say I will Enjoy picking the rat droppings out of my beard after getting buried by the rat swarm. I do like the idea that you can't kill then with certain weapons and things…. just that it goes against the addage that "You always have a chance to kill something in one of our games". Matter fact there was plenty of fire to be had and plenty of ways to be done with the rats in out party. What I am saying is that always having that chance is one of the things I truely enjoy about Hacktastic. Let me know if my memory serves me wrong about the rules and such. I suppose what I am thinking is that the swarm rules remind me of one ways AD&D handles things and there is good with that but there is also a chance for an impossible situation to pop up as well.

Like I said before, I was just sharing some thoughts… not sure that it helps, hope that it does. I hate posting something like this because I enjoy your game… the reason I do is because I want to see it growing and doing better all the time.

Swarms are IMMUNE from Weapon Damage, this is true (Unless you have taken the Vermin Slayer from the Dungeon Delvers Survival Guide) . But a Swung Torch can disperse them, and they are VULNERABLE to ANY AOE Effect (Spells, Flask of oil and the like). They use their SWARM Rating (determined mostly by the size of the swarm) The Large-Sized Swarms we fought in the adventure in Desoto is +10 rating. This was an easy way to make the creature effect cool, usable and not hard to learn. Also it was the best way in my opinion to handle Swarms (be as we do not have hit points and with the Gang up rule being covered in 1,000 rats would mean certain death.

(90 points) Large-Sized Rat Swarm (vermin): Swarm Rating +10 / Speed 6” land (6” Climb) (3” Swim)

Skills: -

Talents: Night Eyes 12”, Natural Climber Talent (Climb Speed same as Land Speed) (10pts base),(Sp)Self Gang-Up Talent (swarm only) (If allowed a Stand & Deliver Combat tactic Swarm Rating is Doubled for attacks and injuries only)(10pts base)

Treasure Rating: Haphazard

Special Attacks and Abilities: Swarm Traits, Self Gang-Up.

With that all said, You are Right and Wrong at the same time. You can't always hurt a creature, but hurting is not the only way to defeat it. you get experience just for facing the thing. So sometimes you need a certain type of attack, Its not IMMUNE TO EVERYTHING! when in doubt RUN or think outside the box. These are all things that we did as old D&d players and we still do them in H/20.

Here is the reason I think you have it a bit wrong: Your an adventurer, it is reasonable to assume you might occasionally get "caught with your pants down" and not have the right tools for the job. It is dangerous to adventure, that is why everyone does not earn thier living by tomb raiding or dragon slaying. There will be times in HACKTASTIC D/20 Fantasy that your PC may not be able to injure a foe. That does not discount what I always say (In our game you always have a chance) Most times a popper(natural 20) or two will get any job done, but sometimes you have to use those neglected things called Skills and Talents to get out of a situation or those even more neglected brain cells, and come up with something. Now I know you are far more Skill and Talent savvy than many or our current players and You are always one to come up with some harebrained scheme to get the job done, so I find it hard to belive that you think everyone doesn't always have a chance.

They have a chance: A chance to buy a freaking torch or even better OIL (you are an adventurer and Dungeons are dark), A Chance to take the vermin slayer template, A Chance to Play a warlock or heck just take an AOE Spell effect, A Chance to RUN or if all elase fails A Chance to wound your buddy and leaving him behind as bait!

I still feel every player has a chance in our game, much more than others. Sure it is deadly, but there are ways around that too. Sure there are some creatures that have IMMUNITIES, hell there are spells and talents that let you have them too. What fun would it be to play if you knew you would always or could always win. You can't always win, but you can always survive, if you are playing by the rules and the GM does not have loaded dice.

In closing I would just like to say, I don't feel it is unreasonable to assume someone might have a torch, a special talent of an AOE effect. If I'm wrong, well now you know to get one of these for your character so to better help your odds when facing swarms. Also now everyone knows they may have to face a MONSTER that may be really nasty and be hard to hurt when they play a Fantasy role-playing game, HUMMM..How Crazy. Who would have imagined? Maybe I should have named it DRAGON HACK, that might have gotten the point across better that HACKTASTICTongue out

Everyone should feel free to comment, they are always read by me and most are welcomed (OK All are welcomed). I try and answer everything that comes my way, so if you have questions I'll try and give you answers. If you have opinions that is cool to, just be ready for me to voice mine. I love our gamers, Grey and I have been friends for years, but we don't always se things the same way. that is what is cool about it. When in deep crap we are sure to come up with different ways out and most usually work, if we can manage to stop picking at  each other long enough to try them.

So pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, answers will be given to every Hack Question, heck we might all learn something.

I like the effect of swarms too, don't get me wrong.

Swarms are the only thing in Hacktastic that I know of with weapon immunity so it is not possible to have something I have in mind.

Here is something that will paint a picture of what I am thinking. You have a new gamer that decides to make a "cool" dungeon to really give the players a challenge. This applies to AD&D for what I was thinking. The first thing he does is go find a creature that you need cold iron to damage it. Next thing he decides is to put some things in that are immune to all damage except things that are silver. Next up he decides to put in a mage with elementals that are immune to all damage except the opposites of thier elemental fire…. water hurting fire, that kind of thing.

That is all done from an innocent point of view that could give a lot of parties fits. Something along a completely different line is a bastardly GM that sets up awful situations like that to simply torment his players. I can think of at least one pickup game involving rust monsters and needing certain types of metal weapons that got out of hand.

All that being said I like the effects of your swarms…. but all I am saying is that sort of thing can open doors to old problems…. innocently done or deviously thought out.

Ok I have been busy and just getting back to the site and catching up on everything. After reading this post my only comment is that is why you have a well rounded party its so you have a chance. That's just my thought on the matter

Creating problems for players is what GM's do.  If the players are prepared, and play smart, work together… they live.  Mostly.  If not…. they die.  The next party will probably be better prepared.  It's a learning process. That's what we are… teachers.  Yeah.  True some players will never learn, or are just not bright enough to use the old "learn from your mistakes" rule.  They die.  It's called natural selection.  Weed out the weak.

No Matter what the rules system, someone can and will manipulate it and make near impossible situations. That has nothing to do with the system, but with how it is used. As you like to say from a state of innocence, I would disagree. If they took that much time to put together a near impossible dungeon, they are far from innocent and knew exactly what they were doing. My advice would be either voice your concerns with your power-hungry GM or take your ball and go home, finding someone else to play with who isn't an asshead with the me against them mentality.

We can give you the tools and rules to play the game, we can't make you use them, That is unless you are playing at my house or a game day event.
